Road Geometry - Beijing

Commuters on bicycles.

Battery powered bicycle - they go silent and fast!
Space for all road users.

Very generous road geometry they use in Beijing. In the main sreets – in each direction - they have 2 or more lanes for vehicles, then a bicycle lane – wide enough for 2 cars to pass, then a 10ft wide footpath. Very friendly for bicycles and pedestrians. Of course there are a lot of bicycles and many run on battery power too, but someone did mentioned that the number of bicycles have greatly reduced in numbers, which is not surprising since the preferred mode of transport for people who can afford them (and there are now many rich people in China)is the private passenger car. And the number of passenger cars have increased tremendously these past few years - hence the traffic jam around the streets of Beijing. People here loves their cars black, preferably Audis (and Volkswagen too). None of the smaller Audi A4s here just the bigger more luxurious A6s. The streets are littered with these black A6s.
